Larry Bell started brewing in 1985, making Bell’s one of the oldest craft breweries east of Colorado.
More than 30 years ago, things were a lot different. Bell’s had one employee. Larry Bell.
The brew kettle was a 15-gallon soup pot. Kegs were washed on an inverted pallet and the heat exchanger was a copper coil in a bucket.
When customers showed up on Friday nights to buy one-gallon plastic, collapsible containers filled from the tap, the thermostat was turned up from 50 to 60 degrees. There was even a jump rope to help keep you warm.
Our original brewery, where beers like Amber and Oberon were first brewed, is located right next door to our General Store and Eccentric Café, which also includes our Beer Garden and patio.
With more than 20 different beers on tap and a full-service restaurant, guests can grab a pint, hop on a tour and then grab a seat.
Our Comstock Brewery, home of our 50-barrel and 200-barrel brewhouse, is located on 30 acres in nearby Comstock, a short 7-mile drive from Kalamazoo.
Designed to allow our guests a first-hand look at our brewing process, fermentation and packaging, tours also include complimentary samples. Most tours last about an hour.
